Yoshi's Island Beta

Apr 04, 2008  The beta version of Yoshi’s Island 64 (later called Yoshi’s Story) has some graphic differences, various minor changes in the level design and a removed “underground” level. This beta level had a black background, water and giant mushrooms, as.

This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Yoshi's Island DS.

Early iterations[edit]

When originally announced at E3 2006, Yoshi's Island DS was tentatively titled Yoshi's Island 2. The game's early box art also featured a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo, implying that this game was at one point going to have Wi-Fi features that were scrapped before the final version was released.

  • Original box art.

  • The original game logo.

Early builds[edit]

In the E3 2006 demo build, players could only defeat enemies while jumping on them with Baby Mario. This was changed by the final version, and the player can defeat enemies regardless of the baby. Baby Peach's cry was also going to sound more adult-like[citation needed].

An early screenshot showcasing a battle with Big Guy the Stilted seems to suggest that Big Guy was once going to be organic, as he had no patches on him in that picture (although one patch is visible near his right foot, which may merely mean his graphics were incomplete at the time).

One screenshot of an unknown origin shows a Black Yoshi traversing a flowery area with Baby Peach. The particular event illustrated in the picture doesn't seem to be left in the final game. The level 'Donuts and Eggs' also wasn't themed in the mid-west, as shown in an early trailer[citation needed].

  • An early battle with Big Guy the Stilted, who lacks mechanical features here.

  • Black Yoshi with Baby Peach.

  • Early Mario's Fleet Feet. Red Yoshi is only available in the 7th level of each world. Light Blue Yoshi normally will appear in this level. This looks midday, vs. the final, which looks like sunset.

  • Early Gilbert the Gooey's Castle. Purple Yoshi appears instead of a Pink Yoshi.

  • Early Gilbert the Gooey fight in Gilbert the Gooey's Castle.

  • Early Kangaroo segment in Mario's Fleet Feet.

  • Early The Goonie Coast Isn't Clear!

  • Early Yoshi on Stilts

  • Bouncies in an unknown level.

  • Yoshi and Baby Peach floating in the air.

  • Yoshi in a subterranean area.

  • Yoshi evading a Super Big Tap-Tap. Notice how in the final version of Mario's Fleet Feet, Yoshi can't run that far right on the screen.

  • A screenshot featuring a Stork Stop. The nearby coins don't appear like that in the final.

Unused data[edit]

Although never used in the game, graphics for Character Coins of Baby Wario and Baby Bowser exist, but they lack animation.[1] Similarly, graphics exist for at least two different title screens[2], and at least one of them was entirely complete when it was scrapped. It's also worth noting that all were static images, unlike the final game's rotating shot. Two of the scrapped title screens have a Yoshi's Island 2 logo.

  • The unused Baby Bowser Coin.

  • The unused Baby Wario Coin.

  • The unused title screen. Notice the resemblance it has to the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island's title screen.

Yoshi's Island 64 Beta

It has been requested that this article be rewritten and expanded to Some or all parts are badly written, badly sourced and/or contain misinformation.

This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Early iteration[edit]

Nintendo marketing department initially pressured Shigeru Miyamoto to have the game use prerendered 3D sprites similar to Donkey Kong Country.[1] The 3D models of Baby Mario and Yoshi used in the introduction are leftovers of this period of development.[2]

Early concepts[edit]

  • The developers experimented with several concepts for two of five years of development before settling with the final idea of 'a game where even though you hit enemies, you don’t die'.[3] One of them was to have Yoshi move independently from Baby Mario and guide him around the levels.[4]
  • The Powerful Mario form was initially supposed to transform Baby Mario into an adult, mustachioed Mario but it was pointed out this concept would seem strange. Shigeru Miyamoto joked he still prefers this early idea to the final version.[4]

Unused graphics[edit]

  • An early sprite of Yoshi spitting out seeds

  • An unused sprite of Yoshi and some magnets. Possibly indicative of a scrapped transformation

  • Early sprites of Yoshi skiing

  • An early sprite of the Vehicle transformation

  • An unused plane transformation

  • An unused mushroom transformation

  • An unused tree transformation

  • An early Train crossing the rails. The final version has a red 'nose' instead of matching the Yoshi's color

  • Several unused Baby Mario sprites. The kanji is 仮, meaning 'temporary'

  • An unused sprite of Baby Mario crawling

  • An unused sprite of Baby Mario striking a victory pose

  • A sprite of Baby Mario sitting in a different artstyle than the used Baby Mario sprites

  • An unused but fully coded Missile Bill, but it appears in the level Endless World of Yoshis in the GBA port

I am pretty sure the gba was capable of everything the snes could do despite the carts not having fx chip, it was more advanced hardware than snes. The original does use some advanced tech but I can't see Nintendo having trouble emulating it. It seems strange to me that throughout the entire lifespan of the Wii we never saw a virtual console release of Yoshi's Island. Now the the Wii U we have the gba version released, which is great, but an inferior handheld version that is zoomed in / cropped, has dulled colors, and degraded music quality.Yoshi's Island is a classic and I want to play it as originally intended without the use of an emulator or buying a SNES / cart. It's just odd that we haven't seen it. I have not played a gba game on VC and was not aware it would look drastically different than the snes VC games. Yoshi's island faq.

1-3 There is also one Character Coin in each level, which can only be collected if the baby on the Character Coin is the one Yoshi is holding. Should the timer be at 30 and all Red Coins and Smiley Flowers are collected, the player is given 100 points for the level, and collecting 100 points in every level in a given world unlocks the world's Special level.

  • An unused Bob-omb

  • An early sprite of a Big Boo

  • An early sprite of a Boo

  • A mockup of an Incoming Chomp using the right half of the sprite. The game only uses the left half and mirrors it

  • Either an early Nipper Plant, a Muncher, or an early Piranha Plant bud

  • An early Sluggy

  • A spinning wrench, possibly indicative of Rocky Wrenches being planned as enemies

  • Possibly the lower half of a Rocky Wrench

  • An unused animation of a Shy Guy lifting an object

  • An unused, smaller Shy Guy with orange highlights on its head and arms

  • An early, smaller Snifit closer resembling the Shy Guy design

  • Sprites of a Shy Guy and Tweeter from Super Mario All-Stars

  • An unused sprite of a Bandit, likely intended for minigames

  • A large Grinder resembling Donkey Kong

  • A Dragon Coin, which may have possibly been replaced with Smiley Flowers

  • A ? Block

  • An alternate sprite of a Crate found in the stone bridge tileset, as the final one is depicted on it front side, and lacks the Question Mark

Unused Music[edit]

The following music sounds distorted in places. They are related to the main theme, which suggests that they might have been used at one point during development but were scrapped. The MIDI data contained might have had parameters changed.[citation needed]
